Ava Schumacher, PhD
PSYCHOLOGIST, SHE/HER/HERS
Licensed Clinical Psychologist: Colorado 4480, authorized to provide teletherapy in 41 states and the District of Columbia through PSYPACT.
I’m Dr. Ava Schumacher, a licensed clinical psychologist with years of experience in providing evidence-based therapy to adults navigating a range of concerns, with particular expertise in the intersection of psychological and physical health.
As a health psychologist, my work centers on the mind-body connection. I specialize in insomnia and sleep issues, chronic pain and illness, and anxiety. I also work with people seeking support around concerns like stress management, mood, navigating difficult life transitions, and making changes when they feel stuck.
My approach to therapy is collaborative, practical, and grounded in evidence-based psychological treatments. I primarily draw from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based approaches to help people develop skills and strategies that lead to lasting change. I also offer CBT-I (CBT for Insomnia), a short-term, structured, evidence-based treatment that is considered a first-line intervention for chronic insomnia. Everyone brings their own history, personality, and perspectives to therapy. I enjoy getting to know each person’s unique story and thoughtfully tailor treatment to each individual’s needs and preferences.
About Me
I completed my PhD in Clinical Health Psychology at the University of Colorado Denver, Predoctoral Internship at Denver Health Medical Center, and Postdoctoral Fellowship at Salud Family Health Centers. I’ve also previously worked in a health psychology specialty practice and a university hospital-based integrative medicine center. In addition to my psychology training, I have a BA in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (Spanish), reflecting my longstanding interest in culture and commitment to diversity.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, taking exercise classes, and adventuring in nature. I also love new experiences including traveling, learning new skills, and studying languages. I believe that personal growth often comes from stepping into the unfamiliar, especially when it feels challenging, which is a belief central to both my personal life and work.
